DAY HIKING - WATERFALLS AND WILDFLOWERS (GH/WW)™
(Including Old Rag Mountain!)

This trip features hiking in the three environments for which Shenandoah National Park is famous: her waterfalls and her wildflowers…and Old Rag Mountain. Lunch is provided. A camera is highly recommended as are supportive hiking shoes.

Within Shenandoah, there is a multitude of trails off the main road and footpath… almost 400 miles worth.. that are rarely explored by the visiting guest. Each hike will be to a destination area that is significant because of its natural beauty and/or cultural significance. Waterfalls, mountain summits, abandoned communities.. hikes will be selected with the season and weather conditions in mind.

TWILIGHT HIKES AT BIG MEADOWS

Easy to enjoy, these evening hikes feature the natural world as it settles into evening. Hiking into the “Big Meadow” at dusk, through the dramatic changing colors of the mountain sky and, eventually, the incredible spread of the summer night sky with its multitude of stars... (At 3,500 ft you are high above the haze and light pollution of the mid Atlantic.) Truly, it’s an unforgettable experience. A jacket is definitely recommended, even following the warmest summer day. Registration is on the day of the hike at the Big Meadows Lodge in Shenandoah National Park.

ROCK CLIMBING / RAPPELLING (RC)

Get that “aired-out” feeling, while climbing almost 3000’ above the Shenandoah Valley floor. This is an unforgettable experience that will make your trip to Shenandoah National Park complete. All necessary gear, plus lunch, is provided. Advance registration is required. This is an introductory thru intermediate level climbing program.

The climbing programs are not extraordinarily physically demanding (for a person of average fitness), but they can be psychologically challenging. All participants should bring a camera for this exciting day!

CANYONEERING (CAN)

It’s hard to beat rappelling down through the spray of an icy waterfall on a hot summer day… only to land a plunge pool of crystal clear, but still icy cold, water… and then keep on moving downstream just to do it all over again. Join our guides late May thru September on one of the several canyons in WV and VA whose waterfall routes we have pioneered. Group size is limited to five.

MONOCACY RIVER CANOEING

There is absolutely nothing that beats a lazy day floating on the river with friends and family on a hot summer afternoon! These low impact, gentle adventures are ideal for a family outing or for a gathering of friends or co-workers. Not a whitewater river, but still a mountain stream, the Monocacy always brings amazement and delight to anyone who ventures onto her waters.. Designated a state scenic river, the Monocacy never disappoints. Bald eagles, great blue heron, green heron, kingfishers, northern orioles, a variety of owls…. all choose the remote banks for the river for nesting.

Maximum capacity for canoes is two adults and two small children.

CANOE CAMPING (CANCAMP)

Perhaps the ultimate soft adventure! For these trips, we paddle the Rappahannock, Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers as well as a variety of other mid-Atlantic streams. Two and three-day trips are available

(By special reservation only. Groups of 2 or more only. Call to find out what streams are running.)

“OVER THE HUMP” (OTH)

A great beginner backpacking trip.. Spend 2 days and 1 night as you traverse (under your own power) the mighty Blue Ridge where it begins to be a significant landform (south of Front Royal VA).. from West to East.. or East to west. Scale the heights on day one, and return to the lowlands on day two. You will have an amazing sense of accomplishment.. and will never regard “the ridge” the same.

OLD RAG MOUNTAIN GUIDED ROCK CLIMBING (ORM)

Old Rag Mountain is known for its exposed, ragged summit…its granite climbs are legendary. Join Shenandoah Mountain Guides ™ on our “home“ mountain. Many of our staff grew up, literally, in the shadow of this mountain and have logged tens of thousands of hours scrambling up and across the many rocks and pitches. We know this mountain like most people know their backyards… it’s been our backyard for our entire lives! And no one knows the mountain better! October - December, and February - April… known to the local climbing community as “Old Rag Seasons” …no snakes, no poison ivy and no tourists combine to make these times of year our favorites. Even in late winter, the south facing granite slabs below the summit area of the mountain have been known to bask in brilliant warm sun. One or three-day guided trips can be arranged to meet your schedule. Come climb, boulder, scramble, or just explore.
