“WHERE THE HECK AM I AND WHERE AM I GOING??” (OTHERWISE KNOWN AS LAND NAVIGATION WITH MAP AND COMPASS) (MC)

Ever wonder where you are and how to get to where you want to go? If you have a compass and a map, we’ll teach you, it’s a snap! One day program, first half day in the outdoor classroom, second half day is spent on the mountainside.



WILDERNESS FIRST AID (WFA/SOLO)
(co-sponsored by TEAMLINK and THE TRAIL HOUSE)

Necessary training for anyone going into the outdoors: hikers, bikers, climbers, geologists, paddlers, hunters, skiers, biologists, and fishermen… (Increasingly a required course for anyone who leads others into the outdoors) The SOLO instructors are the tops in their field and are internationally recognized as pioneers in the field of backcountry medicine. The skills taught in this basic first aid course can make the difference in life and death regardless of whether you are in the snow, on the water or in the mountains.

TECHNICAL ROCK CLIMBING INSTRUCTION (BEGINNER THRU ADVANCED)

Starting with the basics of climbing, rappelling and belaying, and proceeding through knots and technical climbing gear through complex artificial and natural anchor construction, these classes are designed to develop the skills required to begin or advance your technical climbing abilities.

HEADWATERS EXPLORATIONS (HW)

Venture off the beaten path and into the high country with the staff of the Northern Blue Ridge Watershed Institute and Shenandoah Mountain Guides in search of the headwaters of our home rivers. Explore the landforms and the environments that make these rivers what they are. Contact the SMG office for additional information.

ADVENTURE FITNESS CLASS (ADFIT)

Feel trapped indoors? Do you sometimes feel your life is an adventure only in your mind? This spring, prepare your body to live the adventure! … the way the outdoor professionals at the Teamlink Mountain Sports Center do, with strength and aerobic conditioning that will not only help you feel better and think more clearly, but also prepare your body for active outdoor life. Leave that weight pile behind! Paddle! Pedal! Hike! Climb! Run trails!! Shake off the winter blahs…get outside and get fit for adventure!

Classes meet at noon, daily, on the campuses of either Hood College or Frederick Community Colleges.. depending on the activity/weather for the day.

(This program is centered on empowering the participant-students, through teaching highly effective adventure-focused calisthenics, balance and stretching exercises that can be done anywhere, anytime. Activity choices will vary seasonally but can include pool/water work, flat water kayaking and canoeing; hiking with poles; trail running; snow running/hiking and, rock scrambling and bouldering.)

*PLEASE NOTE: with enough interest, other times (AM and PM), locations and private group classes can be arranged!
